VindolandaThe Roman fort at Vindolanda just south of Hadrian's Wall is famed for its well preserved Roman
"postcards". Written on slithers of wood they are an intriguing insight into the every day life of
the colonists and their disdain for the locals, the little Brits.

Tour the excavations, but the museum is the best bit. What did the Romans write about? The awful weather,
the poor state of the roads, their birthday parties, their shortage of cash... Nothing changes!
