Avebury Stone Circles

What impresses about Avebury is not so much the size of the stones as the area enclosed by the ring. It seems curious to us today that until relatively recently the stones were just a bit of a nuisance - getting in the way when the Saxons built the village and obstructing 18th century ploughing: consequently many were removed. |nearby attraction|

Avebury

Come and commune with the ancestors for a while and speculate why, 4,500 years ago, they invested so much time and effort in building this place. Was it a stoneage cathedral, theatre, parliament? Whatever the intention, they have bequeathed us an interesting conundrum around which to walk. Nearby: Silbury Hill. |map|  |more things to do|
